If you are in Mount Kisco for Labor Day, consider the following activities to stay busy:
The Mount Kisco Memorial Pool will be open through Labor Day. The hours of operation will be from noon to 7:00 p.m. Hopefully Hurricane Earl won’t ruin the last pool days.
Complete your back-to-school shopping in local stores. Bedford Central Schools open on Tuesday, September 7. Mount Kisco Elementary School and Fox Lane Middle School will have full days. Kindergarten, however, will have early dismissal. Fox Lane High School 9th Graders will report to school at 7:45 and end the day with a BBQ from 10:50 to 11:25. Fox Lane upper class students (10th through 12th) will have school from 11:30 to 2:22.
On Monday, September 6, St. Francis AME Zion Church will have their annual fundraising barbecue. You can either pick up a meal from inside the church hall or stop by and eat in.
Also, on Monday, September 6, the John Jay Homestead State Historic Site and the Max Pavey Chess Club will hold their annual John Jay Homestead Chess Tournament. Registration is free of charge, and will take place between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. in the Main Barn.
Today, from 10:00 to 4:00, the St. Francis AME Zion Church will host a Street and Health Fair. This annual event will include blood pressure and glucose testing and have vendors selling various items. There will also be hot dog and hamburger sales from inside the church. The church is at the corner of Kisco Avenue and Hillside Avenue. As a result of the fair, Hillside Avenue will be closed from 10:00 to 4:00.
Next week, on Labor Day, September 6, the St. Francis AME Zion Church will have its annual Labor Day BBQ fundraiser. You can either pick up a meal from inside the church or stop by and eat in. The food is delicious and supports good neigbors.

The Mount Kisco Fire Department will hold its annual 9/11 Memorial Service on September 11, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. The MKFD will assemble at the Mutual Fire House on E. Main Street and march across the street to an area in front of the War Memorial. Following the ceremony, there will be a reception at the Mutual Fire House. All are welcome to remember the day that we said we would never forget.
In addition to planning this 9/11 Memorial Service, the Mount Kisco Fire Department is planning for a permanent memorial which they would like to erect between Village Hall and the Mount Kisco Library.
Bellizzi Restaurant in Mount Kisco has started a new club for 6th to 8th graders. The club will make its premiere with an event on Thursday, August 5, beginning at 9:00 p.m. and lasting until 11:00.
The “Bellizzi B Club” will give 6th to 8th graders sole access to the restaurant and game room for a few hours. After this initial event, the restaurant intends to make it a weekly Saturday night program starting in September. Admission will be $25 for the evening and will include pizza and snacks and $5 in game tokens and activities. Club goers will have the option to join the club for free which reduces the nightly admission to $20. On August 5, the first 50 middle schoolers that register will enter for free.
To prepare for the inception of this club, Isi Albanese, the owner of Bellizzi, updated video games and added a digital juke box so the kids can play any songs and even dance if they choose to. Bellizzi is responding to a significant need for these children in the community–they want to have somewhere to go where they can be themselves with their friends. As an added incentive, Bellizzi will raffle off an Apple iPad and iTunes gift cards, which will be drawn at a B-Club party at the end of September.
Isi is a parent of a middle schooler himself and understands a parent’s concerns for making a meeting place that is safe for the kids. Kids will be dropped off and signed in by a parent or an adult and the kids will not be allowed to leave until they are picked up by an adult. Now this age group has a place to call their own where they can spend time with their friends in a social setting.

Final registration for the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 Mount Kisco AYSO season will take place at Mount Kisco Memorial Pool this Saturday and Sunday, August 7th & 8th, from 1:00 to 4:00pm. Register this weekend to guarantee your child’s spot on the team. Registration for both the fall and spring season is only $85.
Mount Kisco AYSO also needs volunteers - and not just for those who know how to play soccer. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mt. Kisco AYSO at mkayso@optonline.net or call Paul Toro, Regional Commissioner at (203) 260-8389, or Beth Mannion, Registrar and Volunteer Coordinator, at (914) 774-4693.
In a total team effort, Mount Kisco defeated Pleasantville 259-235 in Mount Kisco’s final dual meet of 2010. While this week’s defeat of Yorktown was paced by the diving of Connor Farrell and the swimming of Matt Karle, Pleasantville however, did not have a dive team and Matt Karle could not attend the meet. Nevertheless, Mount Kisco prevailed.
After falling behind Pleasantville in the first two strokes, the backstroke and the breast stroke, Mount Kisco rallied in the butterfly and free style to win the meet. The Mount Kisco team cheered each other on and encouraged each other to a victory over a strong opponent.
Thank you to the swim and dive team coaches. The swim team coaches were Kim Holden with assistants Chris Cerutti, Jenn DiChiara, Matt Karle, Ian Kleinsmith, Breeda Mannion, Luke Salvatore, Katie Tipa and Maria Trujillo. The dive team coaches were Ben Ash with assistants Connor Farrell and Tommy Wolkwitz.
Below are pictures from the meet.
During the next few weeks, the Mount Kisco Library is hosting many different events:
On Saturday, July 17, there will be a special book discussion and movie, The Lightning Thief, in the Mount Kisco Library’s beautiful new Community Room
The library is also hosting a special introduction to karate for kids offered by Premier Martial Arts. The program starts at 2:00 PM on Monday, July 19, and will be free.
There is also a special summer book reading club for children. Visit the Mount Kisco Library Kids page by clicking here.
You can also bring your Kindle or other reading device and read in the comfortable air conditioned library.
The Mount Kisco Fire Department organized another successful parade. Here are a few pictures from Friday night’s parade.

The annual Mount Kisco Fireman’s Parade marches off tonight at 7:00. The parade will go north on Main Street from Moore Avenue and end on South Moger. This is one night of the year that the community can thank the firemen for their service.
This parade is one of the final firemen parades in Westchester county. Our Mount Kisco Fire Department and its Mount Kisco Ancient Fife and Drum participate in many parades in Westchester county. Recently, the Independent Fire Company brought home the Best Engine Trophy from the Armonk Fire Department Parade. In the Mamaroneck Fire Department parade, the Mount Kisco Ancient Fife and Drum won trophies for Best Fife and Drum Corp and Best Drum Majorette. Congratulations to Drum Majorette Breeda Mannion for winning the trophy.
