There have been several changes in Mount Kisco to make Kirby Plaza an easier place to walk and drive. These subtle changes, which were focused on improving the appearance of the taxi cab area and the low of traffic.
Last July, the Village of Mount Kisco took down the green taxi shack that was at the southeast corner of Kirby Plaza. The shack, which was used as a dispatching center for two taxi cab companies was unsightly and a fire hazard. The removal of the taxi stand and the overgrown bush behind it opened up Kirby Plaza and views from the train station.

Even after the removal of the taxi shack, Kirby Plaza was congested because of a poorly designed taxi queue system. During the first week of September, a traffic barrier was removed and a four lane queuing system was introduced. As pictured above, the cabs not wait in the queue and there are fewer taxis parked randomly in Kirby Plaza and blocking the access road between Kirby Plaza and South Moger Avenue.
New York State held its primaries on Tuesday, September 15. In Mount Kisco, Democrats had the opportunity to vote for candidates for County District Attorney and County Clerk. The results in Mount Kisco were similar to the results in the County as Janet DiFiore had 163 votes and Tony Casto had 88 votes for District Attorney and Tim Idoni had 137 votes and Robert Morabito had 56 votes.
In Bedford, former Mount Kisco resident David Menken was a big winer. David Menken won the primary election over Todd Gabor, earning the Democratic party line in the general election by a wide margin (576 votes to 214 votes).
On Sunday, September 12, the Mount Kisco Library held their Grand Opening Ceremony. The library, which reopened in August, was a project approved by the voters of Mount Kisco and supported by donations to the Mount Kisco Library Foundation. Remarks were made by Mayor Michael Cindrich and Library Board President Philip Menna. In addition to the Village Board, in attendance were State Senator Vincent Leibell, Assemblyman Adam Bradley and County Legislator Peter Harckham.
Most importantly, however, the library opening was attended by many patrons and friends of the library that will use and support this new library that will be an asset to the community.
On a rainy Friday, the Mount Kisco Fire Department, the Mount Kisco Ambulance Corps, American Legionnaires and about 100 Mount Kisco residents remembered the victims of the attack on the United States on 9/11 and honored the first responders that rushed to help.
The brief ceremony, highlighted by remarks by Richard Alexander and Mayor Michael Cindrich, was organized and sponsored by the Mount Kisco Fire Department.
Richard Alexander, a Mount Kisco firefighter and a former New York City Firefighter, spoke about the loss of many of his fellow firefighters in the attack on 9/11. His comments also addressed the many acts of kindness that followed the attacks and the unity of Americans after the tragic events.
Mayor Michael Cindrich reminded the attendees that we should remember those that lost their lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Flight 93 and honor those that rushed into danger while so many were fleeing. Mayor Cindrich, as a Mamaroneck police lieutenant, was at the site of the World Trade Center in the aftermath of the attack to assist the New York City Police Department.
The community owes the Mount Kisco Fire Department its gratitude for protecting the community and sponsoring this event to help us remember the day we said we would not forget. This was the eighth anniversary of the attack on our nation. Mount Kisco should undertake an effort to dedicate a memorial to the victims of 9/11 and those that responded to aid the victims at the World Trade Center. There is a shaded area at the north end of Kirby Plaza that is unused that could be a central spot for a memorial.
Even though the weather may be wet, here are some things to consider this weekend:
To honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the attack on our country and the World Trade Towers, the Mount Kisco Volunteer Fire Department is hosting its annual service of remembrance. The service will be held at the Mount Kisco Village Hall at 104 Main Street, Mount Kisco on Friday, September 11, 2009 at 6:15 pm.
On Saturday and Sunday, the Mount Kisco Chamber of Commerce will offer its annual Sales Days where merchants will offer sidewalk sales and community groups will offer information about their programs. Their will also be some entertainment.
On Saturday, the Mount Kisco library will have its Grand Reopening. The weekend will include guided tours of the library starting at 12:30, story time in the Children’s Room starting at 1:15 and the reopening ceremony at 3:00.

The campaign for Tony Castro, a candidate in the Democratic primary for Westchester County District Attorney, has planted campaign signs all over Mount Kisco, in public space, including land owned by the Village of Mount Kisco. While it is not appropriate to indiscriminately place these signs on private and public property, the signs do remind Mount Kisco voters that there are elections for public positions outside of Mount Kisco.
In this Democratic primary on September 15, Tony Castro, who has the endorsement of the Independence Party and the Working Families Party, is running against Janet DiFiore, who has the endorsement of the Conservative Party.
This is not an endorsement for either candidate but a reminder for Democrats to vote in the primary on Tuesday.
Peter DiChiara, Deputy Mayor of Mount Kisco, announced that he has filed petitions to run for Judge of the Town of Mount Kisco. Originally, Mr. DiChiara filed a petition to run for the justice position in a Democratic Party primary. After his petitions were successfully challenged by the wife of current Justice John Donohue (see July 29, 2009 and August 18, 2009 entries), Mr. DiChiara collected signatures to run as an independent candidate using the Patriot Party banner.
Mr. DiChiara has pledged that, if elected, he would work for a more efficient processing of cases. Mr. DiChiara noted that, on the August 12, 2009 court calendar, over half of the outstanding cases were from 2008 with several cases from 2006 (see August 20, 2009 entry).
Mr. DiChiara has served as a Trustee in the Village of Mount Kisco for nearly nine years with six years as Deputy Mayor, appointed by Mayor Michael Cindrich.

Patrons that went to the Mount Kisco Library on Saturday were welcomed by locked doors. Even though the library closes each Friday and Sunday, a decision was made, by either the library board or library director, to close the library on Saturday, keeping Mount Kisco residents away from its new multi-million dollar library for a long four-day weekend. If the library needed to be closed on Saturday, it could have opened on Friday, allowing Mount Kisco residents the benefit of the library building that they paid for. Since it reopened in August, Mount Kisco residents have returned to the library to take advantage of its expanded offerings.
Labor Day weekend is the unofficial day of summer. Here are some things to consider this weekend:
Labor Day marks the end of the season for Mount Kisco Memorial Pool. The pool is opened from 11:00 to 7:00 all weekend and the weather forecast is good.
The Hudson Valley Renegades, the minor league baseball team in Fishkill has its final home games this weekend with postgame fireworks on Sunday night.
With the college football season starting, you may want to watch a game. Eduardo’s Restaurant is hosting the Notre Dame Club of New York’s Notre Dame game watch. The game watch on Eduardo’s large HD flat screen television starts at 3:30 and includes package deals for food and drink.
