Injured Firemen Recovering from Maple Avenue Fire

Filed under: News — admin @ 6:35 pm

On April 15, 2010, there was a fire at 50 Maple Avenue. The building at 50 Maple Avenue is a 2 1/2 story legal non-conforming four family residence. It is legal non-conforming since it was allegedly a four family house before Mount Kisco’s current zoning codes were instituted. The fire has been deemed to be suspicious since it appeared to start from outside of the house.

Luckily no residents were injured or killed. Two firemen needed medical attention and are recovering.

It was only due to the fast and efficient actions of the Mount Kisco Fire Department that the house was not completely destroyed and the fire was contained.

This is the third fire on Maple Avenue within two years. In November 2009, there was a fire in a closet in a second floor apartment at 14 Maple Avenue. In 2008, there was a fire at 90 Maple Avenue caused by overcrowding and substandard electrical conditions.

There have also been incidents of violent crime and other unexplained activity on Maple Avenue.

Only as a result of tragic conditions have there been any prosecution of building violations. After the fire at 90 Maple Avenue, the building owner was fined $6,000 for occupancy and electrical violations. A minimal fine was imposed against the owner of 103 Maple Avenue after the police department documented several code violations after the body of a dead man was found in the back yard.

More needs to be done to make living conditions safer for the residents of Maple Avenue and the residents of Mount Kisco. It needs to start with the Building Department.

Assemblyman Castelli Issues Release on Governor’s Emergency Spending Bill

Filed under: News, Opinion — admin @ 3:03 pm

In a press release issued on Monday, Assemblyman Castelli, the Assemblyman representing Mount Kisco, issued a press release explaining why he voted against the Governor’s emergency spending bill.

Assemblyman Castelli noted that the bill did not include funding for New York State Department of Transportation capital projects like the Route 120 bridge in Chappaqua.

Assemblyman Castelli then noted in the press release that “[i]f legislative leaders and Governor Patterson are unable to pass a budget before June, then funding for state parks and other important programs will be in real jeopardy.”

I agree with Assemblyman Castelli and his argument. The problem with his statement is that he is not a candidate, but an Assemblyman. If the budget is not passed before June, it is because he, along with other legislative leaders and Governor Patterson are unable to do so. Assemblyman Castelli ran on a platform of reform, it is time for him to start pushing those reforms.

How Will Health Care Vote Impact John Hall’s Reelection?

Filed under: News — admin @ 1:36 pm

Last Thursday, Congressman John Hall was at the Mount Kisco Senior Center to discuss health care. Three weeks ago, the Congressman that represents Mount Kisco voted for the health care reform bill. In a statement that explained his vote, John Hall wrote the following:

From the day I first took office, I have sought major health insurance reform. It is long overdue. The cost of doing nothing is simply too high. For those of us fortunate to have coverage, our premiums continue to skyrocket. Everyone knows someone whose insurance company refused to pay for treatment their doctor ordered, or dropped their coverage altogether when they got sick and needed it most. . . .

This bill is fiscally responsible. It will cut the federal deficit by $138 billion in the first ten years, and by $1.2 trillion in the second decade. It keeps Medicare strong and healthy for years to come. According to state estimates, this bill will save New York more than $1 billion a year in Medicaid funding.

I think we all understand that insurance companies are not going to reform themselves. I think we all agree that every American should have access to the best health care in the world. Saying “No,” isn’t an answer to the problems our country faces. This bill demonstrates that we as a nation can say “Yes,” and come together to solve the big challenges we face.

Will John Hall’s vote on this health care bill affect his re-election chances?

A look at potential Republican challengers and their position on this bill will follow in another article.
