Wanted: Do Not Enter Sign in Mount Kisco

Filed under: News — admin @ 4:46 pm

The intersection of Route 133 (West Main Street) and Route 117 (North Bedford Road) is a difficult intersection. With the entrance to Shoppers Park, the traffic islands, the merging lane in front of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church and the American Legion and Jeff Feigl Square, drivers can easily get confused.

On the north side of the intersection, there are two one way roads going south: Jeff Feigl Sqaure and the southbound lanes on Route 117. There is, however, no “Do Not Enter” sign at the end of Jeff Feigl Square. This causes more confusion among drivers and may lead to an accident. On more than one occasion, the Deputy Mayor has requested a “Do Not Enter” sign at that location. There has been no action by the village.

The picture on the left shows the south end of Jeff Feigl Square. As you can see, there is no “Do Not Enter” sign. If the village board in one of their cost cutting methods, suspended the purchase of road signs, then the village can use of the two “Do Not Enter” signs on the same pole at the adjacent intersection where the southbound lanes on Route 117 meet Route 133 (pictured above at right).

Fox Lane High School Holds Graduation Ceremony

Filed under: News, Pictures — admin @ 2:50 am

Fox Lane High School graduated just under 300 students on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at a ceremony under a tent at Caramoor in Katonah.  The ceremony may be remembered by the graduates for the flash rain and wind storm that caused the tent to rock during the speech of Delbert Shortliffe, a teacher in Fox Lane’s English department.

Some may have felt uncomfortable during the storm, something that Mr. Shortliffe encouraged the student’s to experience as he urged them as they moved on from high school to take on experiences out of their comfort zone.  Salutatorian, Mount Kisco resident and Harvard-bound Christine Maroti similarly urged her fellow classmates to stretch themselves in new directions (pictured speaking below with Dr. Eric Karle, a board member from Mount Kisco).

Congratulations to the graduates of the Class of 2010 from Fox Lane High School.

La Marqueta - the Good and the Ugly

Filed under: News, Opinion, Pictures — admin @ 6:20 pm

In a recent article in the New York Times (link), the writer, M.H. Reed, wrote glowingly about La Marqueta’s produce and meats.  For instance, the wrtier praised the “beautifully displayed fruits and vegetables here include several kinds of chilies, yams, potatoes and squashes” and the employees that were described as “terrifically helpful and friendly.”  That is the good as La Marqueta can offer residents a wide range of products that it offers in its other stores in Port Chester in Stamford.

The ugly though involves its signs in its store windows on East Main Street.  While the landlord has complied with the Mount Kisco sign ordinance with fashionable uniform red and gold wooden signs, La Marqueta has two paper signs that cover a good portion of its large windows.  In a photo taken by a reader of mountkisconews.com, the two signs read “WE NOW ACCEPT FOOD STAMPS” and “WE NOW ACCEPT NEW YORK STATE WIC PROGRAM.”  While there is no shame to receive public assistance from the federal or state governments to buy food for your family, the cheaply made banners are on eyesore and would be better placed inside the store or, alternatively, La Marqueta could place smaller signs in its windows to replace the current banner size signs that are more appropriately flown behind airplanes.
